Director

Jonathan Silverstein is an award winning theater director with extensive credits spanning more than two decades of work in plays and intimate musicals. He gravitates towards stories about outsiders that feature incisive moments of change. His work features rich challenges for actors and he has collaborated with some of the most exciting actors of their generation, including Kate Baldwin, Derek Klena, Kathleen Chalfant, Marsha Mason, Keith Nobbs, Thomas Jay Ryan, George Salazar, and Michael Urie, among many others. Two of his productions have been honored with Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Ensemble.

As Artistic Director at Keen Company, Jonathan has directed acclaimed productions such as the site specific production of Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking starring Kathleen Chalfant, which was also seen at Long Wharf Theatre, Theatre Aspen, and Bay Street Theater (“sublimely right”), tick, tick...BOOM! (“emotionally overwhelming”; Drama Desk nomination), Marry Me a Little (“intensely intimate”; Drama League nomination), A Walk in the Woods starring Kathleen Chalfant (“a superior revival”), John & Jen starting Kate Baldwin (“limpidly directed…deft acting”), Travels with my Aunt (“blends virtuosity with modesty”), Ordinary Days (“swift, light-handed”; Drama League nomination), and Middle of the Night by Paddy Chayefsky (“nuanced and surprisingly relevant”,

Jonathan also directed the award winning Off Broadway world premiere of Jon Marans’ The Temperamentals produced by Daryl Roth (“a light touch and a strong hand”; Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble). Other Off Broadway credits include revivals of Lemon Sky (“heart-stopping…quietly piercing”), The Dining Room (“a cool emotional pitch”; Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Director; Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble), Tea and Sympathy (“rings with relevance”) and The Hasty Heart (“three, maybe five -hankie stuff”), all for the Keen Company, when he served as Resident Director from 2007 to 2011.

Other NY credits include: Red Herring (“moving, detailed”; New York International Fringe Festival; Outstanding Direction award), Blueprint (Summer Play Festival) and The Train Play (“crisply directed”; Clubbed Thumb).
